Using solar power to cook yak butter tea in Tibet.

Did you know that in the highland villages of Tibet, the sun is so strong that people use solar reflectors for cooking?  Here someone is boiling water for their morning yak butter tea. It’s better than it sounds, I promise.

I was told that previously people could cook atop the solar reflectors as easily as I have cooked on a stovetop, but now the sun has “weakened” to the point that it takes 35-45 minutes to boil your kettle.  Nobody has yet been able to explain what this means, or why it’s occurring.

If you have any insights, or just want to know what yak butter tastes like, feel free to leave me a comment below.

I saw a similar apparatus near Santiago, Chile, a few years ago. I just e-mailed you a photo. I wonder if they’re also experiencing a weaker sun.
